The Smiling Seat Project

Art or Design?

Ms.Marijn from Netherlands is an artist and designer. She came to Grade Two class and did a brainstorming session with us. The children were asked to think of a design for a chair in a public space that could be art but has to be functional.

Ms.Marijn talked about design needing to be user friendly. She shared with us a 3-D map of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam that she designed. The children were intrigued with how she took a 2-D map and making it 3D for the user.

We had made some chairs the day before and talked to her about why we made them for the three little pigs a certain way. She put all our ideas on paper. We were told there were no bad ideas. The brainstorming stage was to get everybody's ideas down.

We made plastercine models of different types of chairs and talked about their funtionality and design. We will do another session with Ms.Marijn to talk about the concept of design and how good design can bring people together.
