Authentic Feedback in Grade Two

We have been looking at Scientific Drawings in our unit of inquiry. We are learning to draw accurately when recording the findings of our experiments.

In our Art lesson, we learned to use feedback to improve the accuracy of our drawings.

We believe that feedback is an essential part of learning for children. It helps a child understand what they are learning and also gives clear guidance on how to improve.

  1. Children were shown the video ‘Austin’s Butterfly’.

  2. We talked about the steps and modelled giving good feedback.

  3. Children were presented with realistic photographs to illustrate biologically.

  4. They paired up and gave each other specific and clear feedback about how to improve their drawings.

We looked closely at our partner's drawing and gave one precise feedback about how to improve each time.

Adam proceeded to make the beak of his humming bird shorter after receiving feedback from Daisuke.

"I think you need to make the top part here more pointy." suggested Ryuki.

"The head should be more like a triangle." was Yuma's first critique to Takeaki.

The children enjoyed the process and understood the value of giving and receiving feedback. "We need to be kind when we tell our friends how to improve." said Daisuke. "This is so fun, can we do it again?" asked Yuma.

Their final drawings are highly accurate with lots of details. They have far exceeded my expectations in terms of their drawing skills and ability to give accurate feedback to their friends.
