Learning to Use Tools

What Can You Make with Wood?

Today's art lesson was all about being creative with pieces of wood. The children were taught how to use different tools like the hand drill, saw, hammer and screw driver. We thought about how we would join them together.

The important part of the lesson was about safety. We had to wear our gloves and safety goggles when using the hand drill and saw.

We learned to use the hand-drill to make holes in pieces of wood. This would be helpful for when we make toys with wheels.

It was important to know how to clamp the wood in place before using the saw. We also learned that using the sandpaper afterwards help to make the edges smooth.

One of the ways to join pieces of wood is to use a nail. Using the hammer safely and under supervision was very important.

We created charming little pieces of work that we will display at the foyer. With these new skills, the children can now better think about how they could build their moving toys.

We look forward to having Todd in class next week to support us with our building and making. Being from New Zealand and having sort of built his own house once, I think his woodworking skills are a lot better than mine!
