Looking at Sculptures

Grade 2 and 5 Art Collaboration

With the G2 and G5 teachers being good friends and all, we thought it would be fabulous for the two classes to work together on an art project. This ties in nicely with our final theme - How We Express Ourselves.

We started with a lesson on Sculpture as an art form. There not being enough time for a full length lecture on classical sculptures, we did a short session by looking at different types of sculptures from different periods in time and identifying similarities and differences. The children were introduced to the two main ways of creating sculptures - adding on or taking away (carving).

The children were paired (Grade Two student with Grade 5). They proceeded to plan their sculptures based on the design brief. They had to think about the context of their sculpture (where it will be placed), the size and using at least two ways to join the pieces together.

They had a wealth of materials to choose from and had access to the tools at our MakerSpace. It will take a few sessions for them to finish this project but so far, it has been really nice to see how the children from the two classes are working together.

The older children are patient and show good listening and the younger ones are really quite thrilled to be working with some of their favourite older friends in school!
